On the 5th of January 2020, the Members of Student Council (CS) meet to review ongoing projects and to discuss plans taking into account current pandemic situation.
Presidents welcomed Members and acknowledged that it was a really busy and hard semester to all, including them. Due to pandemic and constantly changing situation, there were lots of meetings and discussions ongoing with the school’s management, Board of Governors and meetings with other schools to express desires and hopes of the students. Notwithstanding busy schedule, they tried to maintain contact with students through their Instagram page.
Still they found time to think about new projects for this year:
They said that the school’s jumpers could be ordered in January and would be distributed (if possible) in February.
They would like to repaint the “Angolo” (the old smoking area) with the participations of the Art classes.
They would like to open a Café area.
And they would like to add more sanitizers in the bathrooms for once we come back to school.
PS. For those who keep on asking for the “Permessi di uscita” our presidents have ensured that this was conveyed to the school’s management but for security measures it was not allowed during the first semester. During this week (10-15 January 2021) there should be a Security & Safety meeting, and they will try to bring up this matter again.
CoSup Members have also participated in different meetings with the other schools and discussed various issues mentioned before.
Our CoSup representatives would like to implement the Tutoring Project for the S7 by asking our European School alumni to step in. This would need to be developed with the Alumni Europea.
They are also working on the “100 giorni” celebration for the S7
PR
This year our school added the Membro PR within the Students Committee (CS), which is the “public relations”. They work together with other schools to develop our brand, images and representation.
They are now involved in:
A video development, that would present all the European Schools.
An online game event between different schools.
European Schools gadgets
Library
Like last year, the Membro Biblioteca continued monthly thematic stand activity and tried to attract more students by exposing selected books aound a chosen theme. This year, if you passed near the library, you have seen for example the shelves with Sherlock Holmes and other detective novel exposed at the same time when Enola Holmes movie started streaming on Netflix.
Also, the library continued promoting reading and books through their Instagram page.
For lots of happiness to many students, the library now is open full time! This is a big success as students do not have to check hours and can go to the library during lunch time or free “studio” hours.
As the school continues online for the S4-S7 students, those who have younger siblings can ask them to pick up books.
The Library members plan to continue ideas that were put also last year:
To continue the two projects initiated last year: "Promoting books by expressing yourself" and Readers become writers". You can learn more about them in the article here.
They’ll continue to promote books through social media.
Yearbook and Photo Members are trying to find ways how to collect photos from students and to compile them in the yearbook. In addition, they would like to develop a video for the S7 students as it is their last year at school.
The Membro Giornale was one of the luckiest committees this year as they can easily work online. The online newspaper is a space where students can share their interests and thoughts about what is happening around and in the World. This year in particular the committee is trying to introduce more topics about the school and to create a sense of community. They stated that their goal is to involve students in their projects so that anybody would feel welcomed to contribute, write and share. This can be done spontaneously, writing time from time, or suggesting a topic, or creating a video or a quiz, or if someone wishes, can join also the editorial board and contribute more systematically as part of the team. The MembroGiornale is preparing few other surprises for readers in the near future. All initiatives are regularly announced on their Instagram account.
Sport committee was however, the most touched this semester due to COVID-19 for two reasons: the safety measures adopted at school and the fact that they study at home. Nevertheless, even with these restrictions they are working on few activities that will be held as soon as we can return to school:
In addition to the 60 meters race organized by teachers, the sports committee members are planning a "big final" with the best competitors.
They would like to make the "Gym war 1v1", where two choose 2-3 workouts for a number of times and try to do them as quicky as they can.
And the final idea would be a competition with the bars (if the school allows).
The Green Committee (membro ecologico) is in its second year and they are willing to bring a positive change. Our school is already trying to become more sustainable and joined the Green Schools project with other schools in Lombardy (to learn more about this project read here).
They continue collaboration with the Green School project:
The initiatives are focused around five core pillars “pilastri”: Water, Biodiversity, Food waste and Garbage. For instance, for the pillar Water, they would like to install more fountains around the school, so that students would drink tap water from the fountain rather than buying a new plastic bottle of water at the automatic sellers “machinette”.
As already tried in previous years, the Membro Ecologico would like to collaborate with the JRC for the solar panels. It is strange that our school in Italy does not have solar panels when schools in Brussels and in Germany do.
They would like to collaborate with the Mensa Cooperative:
To ask that lunch menu would have more vegetarian and vegan options; if not every day, then at least each week to have one dedicated day at school as the other schools do (for example, in Mol (Belgium), Monday is a day without meat).
To create a better education about healthy meal and balanced diets.
They also would like to create a Garden patch like in the primary school, where students can cultivate sustainable gardening.
And this year they have created Instagram account which is helping to rise more awareness.
Also, it was observed that initially there were many students that wanted to join the Green Initiative. But since many live in different areas outside Varese, not everyone can attend the Green School meetings in Varese. The situation got even more complicated during the pandemic. It was suggested that next year the school could consider having sustainability and ecological teaching as an optional course for the S6-S7 students and, in such a way, students could learn and get involved during their time at school.
Amnesty International is named by the international organisation fighting for human rights, tries to raise money and donates them for good causes. This year, together with Membro Festa, they organised a candy sale and the best Halloween costume competition. After the return to school, they would like to:
Sell some packed sweats and to raise more money for donation,
To sell Valentine’s roses in collaboration with Membro Festa,
To organize initiatives for the Carnival similarly to the Halloween.
The question how to sell and raise money when on a distance was discussed and the comitee is trying to find alternatives.
The Membro Festa group was also limited in their activities due to the pandemic and no parties could have been organized like other years. But they have some activities in mind:
participate to the European schools Eurovision contest,
online Talent show,
and maybe in spring to hold an open air celebration if the school would allow.
We hope that notwithstanding pandemic and distance learning everyone has plenty of interesting initiatives to take part in. We will keep you update on what’s on!
