International Women's Day
March 8th, International Women's Day is a global day to raise awareness about women's equality and to fundraise for female-focused charities. In several places, the International Women's Day is a celebration for women in the same spirit as Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. For many others, the day still has a political character as it focuses on women's struggle for equal rights and on the inequality that prevails in society.
The theme for the International Women's Day this year is “Women in leadership”. Especially with focus on women that are in the front-line for combating COVID-19, such as women working as doctors, nurses, and scientists. Even though these women are as hardworking as their male colleagues; they get paid 11 percent less globally. Women are still underrepresented politically, for example, women are Heads of State in only 22 countries globally. Only 25 percent of national parliamentarians are women on average, this is according to the UN Secretary-General’s recent report.
When women lead, there are positive results, which is shown by some of the most efficient responses to the COVID-19 pandemic led by women. It has also been shown that especially young women are leaders engaging in climate change and equality in all parts of the world. One example is Greta Thunberg, who was the founder of the movement “Fridays for future”. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, an activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize winner so far. She is known for human rights advocacy and has shared her traumatic story of how hard it was to stand up for equal rights. Malala is one of the most inspiring women for generation equality.
To reuse the inspiring conclusion from the UN: “Women of the world want and deserve an equal future, a future that’s sustainable, peaceful, with equal rights and opportunities for all”
ANYONE CAN LEAD BY EXAMPLE. WHAT CAN YOU DO IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
