Memory. The only way we are reminded of its existence is when we forget something. Memory refers to the mental process of registering, storing, and retrieving information.
Memory has three main forms of storage: sensory, memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
Sensory Memory is the earliest stage of memory. It is stored for a very short period, typically half a second for visual information, and three to four seconds for auditory information.
Short-term memory, also known as "active" is the information we are currently aware of. It is stored for about 20 to 30 seconds.
Long-term memory is the continuing storage of information. It is outside of your own awareness but can be called into working memory. Some memories are easier to recall the others.
This is how memory works under normal circumstances. But there are certain factors that affect the memory for the worse. One of the most important factors is time. Information can be quickly forgotten if not retrieved regularly. Other factors include lack of sleep, stress, anxiety, depression, alcohol, abuse, and dementia. How can we store information more easily and improve our memory? First, nothing more helps promote brain health, in general, more than exercising regularly, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, getting around 8-10 hours of sleep, and performing challenging activities. Cognitive psychologists have also discovered a plethora of techniques, such as jotting it down, attaching meaning to it, and grouping it.
Memory is key in learning and allows us to form a meaningful connection to others around us. So, take care of it and keep your brain healthy! Finally, in my opinion, you should nurture it.
