Suit-up day was legend -wait for it- dary!

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

The European school of Varese has celebrated the international ‘Suit up day’ on the 13th of October for over a decade.

But how and why did this tradition start?

October 13th is dedicated to Barnbus “Barney” Stinson from How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), a show created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and produced by CBS. The series, which ran from 2005 to 2014, follows the main character, Ted Mosby, and his group of friends in New York City's Manhattan. One of the side characters, Barney Stinson, is known for his famous and outstanding catchphrases such as: “Legend-wait for it- dary" and “Suit Up!”. The fans of the show HIMYM borrowed Barny Stinson’s catchphrase “Suit Up!” and declared October 13 International Suit Up Day.

How do you celebrate this special day correctly? It's quite simple, you suit up. Anywhere you go, either to school or work, you dress up in something formal and fancy.

The 13th October 2020 was especially significant regarding this tradition. Even though we are going through a global pandemic, many students managed to dress up and honor this tradition –even if it meant accessorizing with a mask. The Membro Foto was present the entire day behind the gym, equipped with professional photo cameras and polaroid-cameras. Thanks to them, students could pose together and have fun creating valuable memories. Countless polaroids were sold and even more pictures were taken on the digital cameras.

‘Suit up day’ therefore enables the pupils to dress up fancy for once, wearing the one item of clothing he/she has been wanting to show off since before quarantine. This tradition made a normal school day special and out of the ordinary. Hopefully some students were excited to come to school that day, just because of this tradition.

Below are some pictures of the outfits we loved the most:

It was amazing to see so many students honoring ‘Suit up day’ by dressing up beautifully, hopefully everyone will participate again next year. We are so excited to see what outfits you show up in!

We all hope this tradition will last forever : )
